Saline County Illinois

Origins of the County Name and Early Settlers

The county was named after the Saline River, which serves as the main drainage system for the southeastern corner of Illinois. The Saline River was named for the salt springs that exist along its course. The earliest land entries in what would become Saline County were made in 1814 by John Wren, Hampton Pankey, and Hankerson Rude.
